Are Mutual Funds Halal or Haram?

Understand what a fund owns before relying on its name.

Look through to the holdings

A fund pools investor money according to its mandate. The name alone does not establish whether its assets and operations meet the Shariah standard you follow.

Read the current documents

Review the investment mandate, portfolio disclosure, screening methodology and any published Shariah oversight. An ethical or ESG label is not the same as a Shariah assessment.

Check the process, not just the largest holdings

Understand how the manager handles changes in compliance and any incidental non-permissible income. Fund-level arrangements may require review beyond screening a few individual stocks.

Ask for qualified guidance

Products and portfolios change. Verify current documents and take unresolved questions to a qualified Islamic-finance scholar. This article does not recommend a fund or issue a personal ruling.

General education only. Not personalised investment advice or a personal fatwa. Screening standards and scholarly views can differ.
